Were it to be

By: Kevin Tighe

Were it to be green:

Green as the grenade,

Green as the grass,

Green as the past;

.

Were it to be green:

Green as full paid cash,

Green as the austere splash,

Green as the caste;

.

Then, and only then, would it be a reality.

Then—and only then—would it be real.

.

Real.

Real as a Smile.

Real.

Real as a Child.

.

I will ask you, though and however,

Would it be clever?

.

Clever as, say:

Yellow?

I ought to argue no.

.

Were it to be yellow:

Yellow as the sunglow,

Yellow as the flower grove,

Yellow as the noon show;

.

Were it to be yellow:

Yellow as lemon,

Yellow as lion,

Yellow as light.

.

Then, and only then, would it not do.

Then—and only then—would it not do.

.

What of, this you might say:

Red?

Nay.

Red won’t grow.

.

Were it to be red:

Red as the Lost Paradise,

Red as the Lost Sand,

Red as the Lost Man;

.

Then, and only then, would it not do.

Then—and only then—would it not do.

.

But, perhaps, it could be,

Yes, of course, it could be:

A blue—a blue of some shade.

.

Were it to be blue:

Blue as your clichéd sky,

Blue as the river gone wild,

Blue as your wave goodbye.

.

Were it to be blue:

Blue as your eyes,

Blue as your teary cries,

Blue as your mountain climb.

.

Stop.

.

Yes, at here we must stop,

At here let us yield the plot.

.

These words may have been fallible

—my claims chastise-able.

.

I will simply say this,

This, and the words in the above bliss:

.

Let it be as it shall be.

To be seen as it should be seen.

For the color is for one, and one only:

.

You.

Not I.

You, and your eye.
